African Center Selected to Co-Host Two Flagship Side Events at UNCAC CoSP11
Advancing Africa’s Priorities in the Global Anti-Corruption Agenda
The African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development will be hosting two side event, at the upcoming at the upcoming 11th Session of the Conference of the States Parties (CoSP11) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
Scheduled for Tuesday, 16 December 2025, these events will spotlight Africa’s priorities within the global anti-corruption and asset recovery agenda, in collaboration with key international and national partners.
1. Asset Returns, Sustainable Development, and the Role of Civil Society in Return Mechanisms
Organizers:
African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development; Federal Ministry of Justice (Nigeria); Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); UNCAC Coalition; Transparency International Brazil; CiFAR; Stolen Asset Recovery (StAR) Initiative; and the Government of Switzerland.
Focus:
This session will explore inclusive and transparent approaches to the return of stolen assets, highlighting how asset returns can be aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Discussions will emphasize the crucial role of civil society in ensuring accountability, transparency, and public benefit in asset return mechanisms.
2. Victims’ Compensation and Justice: Tackling Impunity
Organizers:
African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development; CLEEN Foundation; Global Survivors Fund; Institute of Legislative Ideas; NABU (Ukraine); Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR); UNCAC Coalition; Transparency International Secretariat; Government of France; Government of Colombia; and the Organization of American States (OAS) Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (ICHR).
Focus:
This event will examine strategies to advance victims’ compensation, promote restorative justice, and strengthen accountability frameworks to combat impunity in corruption and asset recovery contexts.
Pre-CoSP11 African Strategy Webinar
To complement these engagements, the African Center will convene a Pre-CoSP11 African Strategy Webinar, bringing together regional and international actors to coordinate advocacy, policy, and programming efforts ahead of CoSP11.
The webinar will focus on advancing Africa’s shared anti-corruption priorities, including:
- Asset recovery and transparent return mechanisms
- Restorative justice and victims’ rights
- Beneficial ownership transparency
- Youth participation in governance and accountability initiatives
Insights and recommendations from this session will directly inform the dialogue at the side events to be held by the African Center.
As Chair of the UNCAC Coalition’s Victims of Corruption Working Group, the African Center’s Executive Director, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, continues to champion Africa’s voice in global anti-corruption policy discussions. Her leadership reinforces the importance of victim-centered and inclusive approaches in shaping international frameworks on asset recovery and justice.
