CIVIL SOCIETY FORUM: HAPPENING LIVE IN ATLANTA

The African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development is delighted to join the opening ceremony of the Civil Society Forum happening today, 10th December 2023 at Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

The Civil Society Forum aims to recognize the crucial role of civil societies organization (CSOs) in the fight against corruption through bringing expertise and experience and acting as a watchdog of the government when need be. It also seeks to magnify the voices of civil societies around the world, to promote the goals of the Summit for Democracy, and explore the involvement of CSO in the implementation of United Nations Convention against Corruption.

Currently in attendance are about 900 CSO from different parts of the globe. Welcoming remarks was delivered by Richard Nephew, US Coordinator on Global Anti-Corruption, US State Department. Also delivering remarks are Ghada Waly, Executive Director, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Matthias Hunter, Managing Director, UNCAC Coalition who spoke on the pertinent role of CSO in the UNCAC fora and the need for State parties to include CSO participation in CoSP.

Sanjay Pradhan, CEO Open Government Partnership whilst giving his remarks noted that CSOs are drivers in the Anti-Corruption fights and OGP empowers them to liase with the Government to be more open and less corrupt. He stated that there are over 1000 Anti-Corruption reforms championed by CSOs through OGP. He further highlighted that Nigeria is the first African country to establish Beneficial Ownership register. The keynote address would be presented by Uzra Zeya, under Secretary for Civil Security, Democracyand Human Rights, U.S State Deoartment.
