STATEMENT ON SIGNING OF MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN NIALS AND AFRICAN CENTER

Today 13 September 2023, the African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development (African Center) and the Nigerian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) commenced Phase 1 of their project on the  “Documentation of the Progress made in the Implementation of Stolen Asset Recovery Measures in line with the United Nations Convention against Corruption(UNCAC), the African Union Convention for the Combatting and Prevention of Corruption (AUCPCC) and Sustainable Development Goal 16 as well as the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063”.

With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding today between the African Center and NIALS, the organizations reiterate their commitment to the fight against Illicit financial flows and the recovery and return of illicit assets to countries of origin.

In addition, this collaboration will:

  1. support research on the experiences of anti-corruption practitioners in the recovery and return of stolen assets,
  2. document international best practices on the link between the return of stolen assets, and SDG 16.4 targets, and
  3. assess the progress made by African Countries in the implementation of UNCAC, AUCCPC, SDG 16, and AU 2063 Agenda.
  4.  address significant knowledge gaps in the AU and UN Convention

The organizations will convene a hybrid webinar titled ‘Exploring Africa’s Stolen Assets Recovery and Return Trajectory: Efforts to Achieve Agenda 2063 and UN SDG 16’ on the 20th September 2023. The webinar aims to raise awareness regarding the progress made in the recovery of stolen assets in African countries.
