The Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Money Laundering Committee (NBA-AMLC), in collaboration with the African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development, is set to host a one-day sensitization workshop aimed at strengthening Anti-Money Laundering, Countering the Financing of Terrorism, and Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT/PF), and professional ethics awareness among Nigeria’s next generation of lawyers.
Scheduled for Friday, 21st November 2025, at the Nigerian Law School, Bwari Campus, the workshop will bring together experts from the NBA-AMLC, facilitators, and aspirants to the Nigerian Bar. In addition to the physical session in Bwari, two other campuses will join virtually, ensuring broad participation across multiple Law School locations.
The sensitization program is designed to equip aspirants to the bar with practical knowledge on identifying red flags, fulfilling their reporting obligations, and navigating Nigeria’s legal and regulatory frameworks. It also contributes to ongoing efforts to strengthen a culture of integrity and compliance within the legal profession.
The workshop will deepen students’ understanding of the ethical duties required of Legal Practitioners, with particular emphasis on Chapter Two of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023 (RPC 2023), and introduce them to the “Guidelines and Rules on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism for Legal Practitioners.” It will further enhance the capacity of academic staff, law students, and other stakeholders by improving their awareness of the regulatory and institutional frameworks governing AML/CTF/CPF in Nigeria.
As part of the FCDO-funded project, “Tackling Illicit Financial Flows through Asset Recovery, Management, and Strengthening ML/CFT/PF Compliance in Nigeria,” this activity demonstrates the commitment of the African Center and its partners to strengthening compliance systems and empowering future lawyers to contribute effectively to national development, asset recovery, and the fight against corruption.
