The African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development.

The African Center’s 2026 Impact: Building Stronger Governance, Recovering Stolen Assets

Since 2022, the African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development has established itself as a critical voice in Africa’s fight against corruption, illicit financial flows, and financial crime. Headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria, the organization operates at the intersection of governance, accountability, and sustainable development. The numbers speak volumes: over 11,000 legal practitioners and regulators trained, 64 NBA branches reached on AML/CFT compliance, 120+ justices and chief judges sensitized, 3,000+ law students trained, and recovered-asset tools deployed in 3 countries. The African Center has directly shaped Nigeria’s governance and anti-corruption landscape through landmark initiatives including POCA 2022 implementation, the launch of Nigeria’s National Database for Recovered Assets, development of the NBA-AML Portal (a digital compliance platform), and comprehensive AML/CFT reform across the legal sector and judiciary. These achievements position the organization as a trusted partner for the Federal Ministry of Justice, EFCC, National Judicial Institute, and international bodies including the UNCAC Coalition, African Union, and G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group.

Beyond its national impact, the African Center’s influence extends across Africa and the globe. The organization collaborates with regional institutions on beneficial ownership transparency, whistleblowing, and anti-corruption reform, while serving as a board-level voice in international civil society on corruption accountability. Through research and knowledge products—from CSO advocacy toolkits to the Open Asset Recovery Database to ESRC-funded policy briefs—the Center amplifies advocacy and shapes policy at every level. As governance challenges continue to evolve, the African Center remains committed to delivering practical, evidence-based solutions that strengthen institutions and advance accountability across Africa.
