The African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development.
The African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce its participation in the 2024 Anti-Corruption Seminar of the African Development Bank Group, themed “Profit from Integrity: Capitalizing on Anti-Corruption Measures in Africa.” This seminar aims to recast the narrative around anti-corruption efforts, emphasizing their economic, governance, and ethical benefits in the African context.
The seminar, organized by the Governance and Economic Reforms Department (ECGF) of the African Development Bank, seeks to achieve three primary objectives. Firstly, it aims to enhance understanding and increase awareness of the specific challenges faced by African countries in combating corruption and effective strategies to address them. Secondly, it seeks to demonstrate the economic benefits of anti-corruption measures and their potential to directly boost the financial health of nations through asset recovery and fines. Finally, it aims to promote engagement and foster greater investment and commitment to anti-corruption measures from African nations.
The African Center’s Founder, Juliet IBEKAKU-NWAGWU, will contribute to Panel 1, discussing “Asset Recovery Successes and Challenges in Africa.” Her extensive experience as Director of the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit will provide invaluable insights into overcoming legal and political barriers in asset recovery efforts. Other distinguished panelists include Martha CHIZUMA, Former Head of Malawi Anti-Corruption Agency; Iker LEKUONA, Director, ICAR Basel Institute on Governance; Lloydette BAI-MARROW, Founding Partner, Parametric Global Consulting; and Simplice ANGAN, Procureur Adjoint au Pôle Pénal Economique et Financier de Cote d’Ivoire.
Keynote speakers include Abdoulaye COULIBALY, Director of ECGF, and Charity Hanene NCHIMUNYA, Executive Secretary of the African Union Advisory Board against Corruption. This seminar promises to be a pivotal moment in the fight against corruption in Africa, and the African Center’s participation will undoubtedly contribute to shaping actionable recommendations for strengthening asset recovery frameworks across the continent.
