As Africa commemorates African Anti-Corruption Day 2026 under the theme, “Scaling Up the Promotion of Integrity and Anti-Corruption Actions Across Africa,” the African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development calls on governments, institutions, businesses, civil society organisations and citizens to move beyond commitments and deliver measurable results in the fight against corruption.
Africa has established important legal, policy and institutional frameworks to prevent and combat corruption. However, the effectiveness of these frameworks depends on consistent implementation, credible enforcement, institutional independence and sustained political will.
The African Center calls for stronger anti-corruption enforcement, greater accountability for public officials and private actors, and improved cooperation among national, regional and international institutions. Those responsible for corruption, illicit financial flows and the diversion of public resources must be held accountable through transparent and effective legal processes.
Particular attention must also be given to the recovery and management of stolen assets. Recovered assets should be properly documented, independently monitored and managed transparently for the benefit of citizens, especially communities affected by corruption, poverty and the loss of public resources.
Scaling up integrity also requires stronger beneficial-ownership transparency and effective protection for whistleblowers, journalists, civil society actors and other individuals who expose corruption and wrongdoing. People who report corruption must be protected from intimidation, retaliation, victimization and other forms of abuse.
The fight against corruption cannot be left to governments alone. Civil society organisations, professional bodies, businesses, the media, communities and citizens all have important roles to play in promoting ethical conduct, demanding accountability and strengthening public confidence in institutions.
The African Center remains committed to promoting accountable governance, transparent asset recovery, institutional reform, public integrity and sustainable development across Africa. We will continue to work with governments, development partners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to advance practical solutions that translate anti-corruption commitments into measurable outcomes.
On this African Anti-Corruption Day, we reaffirm that Africa’s development and prosperity depend on transparent, responsive and accountable institutions that serve the interests of the people.
