African Governance Conversations — Episode 01
African Governance Conversations Launches with Inaugural Episode on the Future of Artificial Intelligence in Africa
Episode 01: “AI in Africa: Who Is in Charge and Where Is It Going?”
The African Center is pleased to present the inaugural episode of African Governance Conversations, a podcast series dedicated to exploring critical issues shaping governance, public policy, accountability, innovation and sustainable development across Africa. The first episode, titled “AI in Africa: Who Is in Charge and Where Is It Going?”, examines the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its implications for Africa’s governance, economic development, digital sovereignty and future.
As AI increasingly influences public administration, business, employment, security and democratic processes, important questions are emerging about Africa’s readiness to harness its opportunities while addressing the risks associated with its development and deployment.
Who controls the technologies shaping Africa’s digital future? How can African countries develop regulatory frameworks that protect their interests? And what role should governments, civil society and the private sector play in ensuring that AI serves Africa’s development priorities?
These questions form the foundation of an engaging conversation featuring Brook Horowitz, CEO of IBLF Global and Chair, Chairwell Partners, in discussion with Obialunnanma Nnaobi-Ayodele, Deputy Project Director at the African Center.
The episode explores Africa’s emerging AI policy and governance landscape, including the African Union’s Continental AI Strategy, national regulatory initiatives, and the growing influence of global technology powers. It also considers the implications of AI for employment, innovation, data protection, misinformation, digital inclusion and institutional accountability. Particular attention is given to the importance of African participation in global AI governance discussions and the need for policy approaches that reflect the continent’s unique socioeconomic realities, institutional capacities and development aspirations.
